Baby Premier anomaly scan - 18 - 24 weeks
What is an anomaly scan?
A Baby Premier anomaly scan is a very detailed examination of your baby’s anatomy (body structure).
It provides an assessment of your baby’s head, brain, face, spine, heart, stomach, bowels, kidneys, bladder
and limbs. This assessment helps to detect fetal anomalies at early stages of pregnancy.
The placenta and amniotic fluid (liquid that surrounds your baby) is also assessed. If your sonographer
observers the placenta is low lying a further scan is recommended at 35 – 38 weeks, referred to as
a Baby Premier presentation scan.
An anomaly scan is ideal for parents-to-be looking for reassurance or as a secondary option when earlier
screening tests have not been performed.
What happens if an anomaly is detected?
If an abnormality or problem is detected your sonographer will explain the findings and liaise with your
obstetrician or midwife to arrange further follow-up.
