Baby Premier growth scan - 24 - 42 weeks
What is a growth scan?
A Baby Premier growth scan provides an assessment of your baby’s overall development and growth. Your
sonographer will obtain four measurements from your baby. Two measurements are taken from your baby’s
head, one around your baby’s abdomen and a measurement of the femur length (longest bone in the body).
This will show if the growth of your baby is within the normal range for your stage in pregnancy.
We will also check the placenta, volume of the amniotic fluid around your baby, provide an estimate of your
baby’s weight and determine the baby’s position in the womb (e.g head down or head up).
The aim of a growth scan is to determine the growth and health of your baby.
What happens if we detect a concern with your baby’s growth?
If the sonographer identifies the growth of your baby has slowed or if the volume of amniotic fluid surrounding
the baby has reduced, they will assess the blood flow within umbilical cord. This enables the sonographer to
report whether the placenta may be compromising your baby’s wellbeing.
Your sonographer will discuss any concerns with you in depth and we will liaise with your obstetrician and
midwife. This ensures the most appropriate follow up advice and care is given to you and your baby.
Preparing for and during your scan
• It is important that you bring along your maternity notes
• Allow 20 – 30 minutes for your appointment
• It is not a necessity to arrive with a full bladder
• Occasionally we may ask you to go for a walk or drink some fluids if your baby is lying in an awkward position
• You will be asked to complete a registration form
• If a problem is detected we will send a report to your obstetrician or midwife so that follow up action can be arranged
